Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone have Laser treatments?
Almost everyone can receive laser treatment, although some people will have better results than others. Light skin and dark hair are the ideal combination for the laser to work most effectively. Blonde, grey and white hair lack enough pigment for the laser to target. Good results are difficult to achieve on tanned skin, therefore, the fall and winter months are ideal times to begin your treatments. Darker skin types will require more sessions to see the best results. How does the Laser work?
The LightSheer emits a pulse of high energy light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, effectively heating up and destroying the follicle. Lasers are only effective during the growth phase. This means that more than one session (generally between 3 and 7) are usually required to target each growth stage. To increase the comfort level during treatment, the LightSheer has a patented "ChillTip" on the application head to help reduce the surface temperature of the skin and to prevent thermal injury. It is important to be aware that there are many different types of laser and light based devices on the market today. IPL (intense pulsed light) is not a laser and is not known to produce permanent results vs. treatment with laser. The LightSheer is considered the gold standard in hair removal technology, and Shuswap Laser Clinic is pleased to offer this result-oriented system.
What can I expect during a treatment?
Having Laser performed feels similar to a series of pinpricks or elastic band snaps on the skin. The procedure is quick, lasting a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the area treated. Some areas are more sensitive than others, and if necessary, a topical numbing cream can be applied prior to treatment. Following treatment, the area will likely be red and feel similar to a sunburn, lasting a few minutes to a day or two. Most often people can return to their regular activities post-treatment.
How should I prepare for my treatment?
Avoid the sun or tanning beds for 4 - 6 weeks prior to and following treatment. Do not wax, tweeze, thread or bleach the hairs to be lasered for 4 - 6 weeks. Shaving is allowed anytime before and in between treatment session. Avoid AHA's, astringents and glycolics (found in some skin care products and facial peeling systems) 4 weeks prior to treatments. Shave the area to be treated the night before or the day of the treatment, as there is to be no hair on the surface of the skin. Leave the skin free of creams, lotion, deodorants and makeup treatment day.
